What is the National Science Olympiad for Class 5?

The National Science Olympiad (NSO) is a yearly science exam for students of Classes 1 to 12, conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). It tests science knowledge, logical reasoning and higher-order thinking through multiple-choice questions.

SOF’s current website presents this exam as the International Science Olympiad (ISO), while schools, parents and most books still say NSO. It is the same exam, and the Class 5 pattern is the same under both names. Level 1 is open to Classes 1 to 12. Level 2 is for Classes 3 to 12 students who qualify from Level 1; published cut-off reports describe this as roughly the top 5% class-wise.

When is the Class 5 exam in 2026–27?

SOF has announced three Level 1 dates for the 2026–27 session. A school chooses one, and every student in that school writes on the same date. Registration normally goes through the school’s Olympiad coordinator.

Level 1 dateDay set
30 October 2026Date one
19 November 2026Date two
3 December 2026Date three

Confirm the school’s chosen date on the official SOF exam dates page. Level 2 dates are announced separately.

What is the NSO exam pattern for Class 5?

Level 1 has 50 multiple-choice questions, 60 marks and a one-hour time limit. There is no negative marking.

SectionQuestionsMarks per questionTotal marks
Logical Reasoning10110
Science35135
Achievers Section5315
Total5060

The Achievers Section holds only 5 questions but carries 15 of 60 marks—25% of the paper. In Level 2, Class 5 has 45 Science questions of 1 mark and 5 Achievers questions of 3 marks; there is no separate Logical Reasoning section.

What is in the Class 5 NSO syllabus?

SOF’s current Class 5 syllabus has three parts.

Section 1: Logical Reasoning

Patterns; Analogy and Classification; Geometrical Shapes; Mirror and Water Images; Direction Sense; Ranking; Alphabet Test; Logical Sequence of Words; Puzzle Test; Coding and Decoding; Clock and Calendar.

Section 2: Science

Animals; Human Body and Health; Plants; Natural Resources and Indian Heritage; Pollution and Calamities; Earth and Universe; Matter and Materials; Force and Energy.

Section 3: Achievers

Higher Order Thinking Questions (HOTS) based on the Section 2 Science topics.

Important: In Level 1, 60% of questions come from the current class syllabus and 40% from the previous class. A Class 5 child should revise Class 4 topics too. Level 2 and the Achievers Section use the current class syllabus only.

How many weeks do you need?

Six to eight weeks of steady work, around 45 to 60 minutes on school days, is a sensible target. Short, regular sessions beat long weekend marathons. Add 15 minutes of Logical Reasoning every day from week 1.

WeekFocus
1Read the SOF syllabus, revise Class 4 topics and attempt one untimed sample paper.
2Plants and Animals.
3Human Body and Health; Natural Resources and Indian Heritage.
4Pollution and Calamities; Earth and Universe.
5Matter and Materials; Force and Energy.
6Achievers questions and descriptive answer writing.
7Two full timed OMR papers and a review of every mistake.
8Revise the mistake list, light practice and early bedtimes.

How should a Class 5 child learn science?

Use a four-step loop: read the topic, close the book and explain it aloud simply, draw a quick labelled diagram, then answer five MCQs. If a child cannot explain it aloud, the concept is not yet secure.

School textbooks are the natural first read; NCERT publishes books free on the NCERT website. Treat the SOF syllabus list as the reference and textbooks as support. For hands-on practice, the 101+10 New Science Games activity book offers experiments and working models for ages 8 to 15.

How do you handle Logical Reasoning and Achievers?

Practise one reasoning type per day: direction sense on Monday, coding on Tuesday, calendar on Wednesday, and so on. Keep a small notebook of the tricks that worked. For Achievers questions, underline what is given, write down what is being asked, and eliminate options that break a basic science rule. Memorised answers will not help.

Sample questions with solutions

These original practice questions were written by the V&S Editorial Team in the style of the Class 5 syllabus. They are not taken from any SOF paper.

Logical Reasoning

  1. Meera walks 4 m north, turns right and walks 3 m, then turns right again and walks 4 m. Where is she now? (A) 3 m west (B) 3 m east (C) 4 m south (D) 7 m east

Answer: B. She returns to the starting line after walking south 4 m, so she is 3 m east of where she began.

  1. If CAT is written as DBU, how is DOG written? (A) EPH (B) ENH (C) DPH (D) EPG

Answer: A. Each letter moves one place forward: D→E, O→P and G→H.

  1. If the 5th falls on a Monday, which day is the 19th? (A) Sunday (B) Monday (C) Tuesday (D) Saturday

Answer: B. The 19th is 14 days later—exactly two weeks—so the weekday repeats.

Science and Achievers

  1. Which change can be reversed? (A) Burning a candle (B) Melting ice (C) Cooking an egg (D) Rusting iron

Answer: B. Melted water can be frozen back into ice.

  1. Which is renewable? (A) Coal (B) Petroleum (C) Wind (D) Natural gas

Answer: C. Wind is naturally replenished; fossil fuels take millions of years to form.

  1. A watered plant is kept in darkness for ten days. Its new leaves turn pale. What stopped, and what was missing? (A) Respiration/oxygen (B) Photosynthesis/sunlight (C) Digestion/water (D) Pollination/insects

Answer: B. Photosynthesis needs sunlight. Without it, the plant cannot make enough food.

Why does OMR sheet practice matter?

An OMR sheet is read by a scanner, so a half-filled bubble can cost marks. Rehearse at home with OMR-style sheets:

  • Darken one circle fully and never mark two options.
  • Stay inside the circle and keep the sheet clean.
  • Check the question number against the row each time.
  • Follow the day’s instruction about pencil or ball pen.
  • Leave no question blank because there is no negative marking.

How should you use sample papers and mock tests?

Treat every paper as a diagnosis tool, not a score to be proud of. SOF publishes Class 5 sample papers. After each paper, create an error log with the question number, why it went wrong, and the topic to revise.

The book has five sections: Science, Logical Reasoning, Achievers, Subjective and Model Papers. Chapters end with MCQs and detailed solutions. It includes a CD with a study chart, tips and tricks, the exam pattern and links to previous years’ papers.

How to use it: Read Science chapters in weeks 2–5, use Logical Reasoning in the daily 15 minutes, move to Achievers and Subjective in week 6, and reserve the model papers and OMR sheets for weeks 7–8.

Two honest limits: Compare the contents with the current SOF syllabus and fill any gap from SOF’s own pages. The exam itself is entirely MCQ, so use the Subjective section to deepen understanding, not as an exam-format replacement.

How do you choose an Olympiad book?

What to checkWhy it matters
Matches the current SOF syllabusMissing topics mean missed marks.
Concepts before questionsBuilds understanding, not guesswork.
Solutions explain the reasoningLets a child learn from errors.
Real Achievers practiceThese questions carry 25% of the marks.
OMR sheets and full mocksBuilds exam-day confidence.
Clear diagrams and simple languageKeeps a 10-year-old reading.

How can parents help without pressure?

Keep sessions short and calm, praise effort rather than rank, and let the child teach you a topic once a week. Children aged 6 to 12 need 9 to 12 hours of sleep per 24 hours, so protect bedtime—especially in the final week. The V&S guide on brain power and focus has more age-appropriate study habits.
